Dr. Griffith was called to Peoria Saturday owing to the illness of his daughter-in law, Mrs. Geo. Griffith. Her death occured Sun morning and the funeral was held Wednesday morning in Peoria.

Mrs. Griffith was formerly Miss. Emma Butler of Washburn.  She was well known here having lived here the first years after marrage...(the rest cut off by poor microfilming

I now have the copies from the court house.  Emma did not die of childbirth

but kidney infection which cause early childbirth.  A male was born and

lived 1 month and 6 days.    I couldn't find Fannie

Dailey's death certificate either.

You were correct though about were Emma is buried.  Emma and the child are

at Springdale Cemetary and George is at Washington I think near his parents

and brothers.  I am going to Springdale on Monday to find the graves and see

if Frances and her husband are buried there.

    It is family lore that Mary [or Emma] was related to "Wild Bill" James Butler Hickok of South

Dakota history fame, having been gunned down in Lead SD by McCall.

When Lurla Griffith Mayne was in nurses training at Peoria Methodist Hospital, [~1957] she cared for a man named James Butler who said he was related to her, and had, because of his relationship to Wild Bill Hickok, played that person in later "Wild West" shows done by William Cody.

Tazewell Country Reporter and Washington Post and News Washington, IL, Thursday, December 24, 193 6, Page 1, Column 7. Death of Son of Dr. Griffith in Peoria Sunday

George M. Griffith, Sr., 71 years old. Resident of Peoria for the past 38 years, died Sunday morning at the home of his son, Thomas B. Griffith. 1433 Missouri Avenue, where he had resided for the past seven years.

He was bom in Hardin county, Illinois January 1. 1865 the son of Dr. William T. and Lucy Ann Griffith, and was married to Mary E. Butler in 1895. She died in Peoria in 1909. Mr. Griffith was a retired carpenter.

Surviving are four sons, Thomas B., George M., Jr., and Benjamin R. Griffith, Peoria, and Joseph K. Griffith, Fairview, Ill.; one daughter, Mrs. H. E. Carrithers, Detroit, one brother, Thomas Griffith, Peoria; and nine grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted at 9:30 o'clock Tuesday morning at the Wilton mortuary chapel. Burial was in Glen Dale cemetery.

Mr. Griffith was the son of Dr. Griffith, Washington physician many years ago and will be remembered by many people here.

With the death fo his wife George M. Griffith kept the older children , but put the younger ones in an orphanage.  (Home of the Homeless, 1416 Knoxsville Ave Peoria]

        Upon leaving Wards, He became a custodian at Limestone High School,

where because of his dedication to the Baseball team the School Base-

ball field was named after him.
